In 1911, Vancouver Breweries (Vancouver Brewery & Red Cross Brewery amalgamated in 1900), the Canadian Brewing & Malting Company (of Vancouver), the Union Brewery (of Nanaimo), and the Pilsener Brewery (of Cumberland), were all amalgamated to form the British Columbia Breweries, Ltd. About 1916, B.C. Breweries was forced into bankruptcy, due to financial problems.
